There’s something magical about merging two beloved comfort foods. I still remember the first time I baked chocolate chip pizza for my nieces during a rainy Saturday in Santa Rosa. They couldn’t believe dessert came in a pizza pan! I whipped it up with a cake mix and pantry staples, and the kitchen smelled like pure happiness. That recipe became our rainy-day ritual, always warm, always messy, and always devoured in minutes. Today, I’m sharing that same recipe with you, right from my oven to yours. It’s fast, failproof, and absolutely unforgettable.

The Magic of Chocolate Chip Pizza

The charm of chocolate chip pizza is simple: it feels playful but tastes luxurious. If you’ve never had it, imagine a buttery, cookie-like topping melting into a soft, golden crust. The contrast of textures, crispy edges, tender cake-like middle, and gooey chocolate chips, makes it wildly addictive.

Unlike traditional desserts, chocolate chip pizza is both a showstopper and a time-saver. It takes under 30 minutes and is perfect for family nights, birthdays, or spontaneous sweet cravings. It’s easy enough for kids to help with, yet impressive enough to serve at a dinner party.

What makes this version stand out? We’re using yellow cake mix, which gives the topping a tender, crumbly richness you can’t get from scratch. Combined with melted butter, it becomes a sweet, decadent layer that spreads easily and bakes into golden bliss.

Step-by-Step Recipe Breakdown

Let’s break down how to make chocolate chip pizza at home, step by cozy step. You’ll be amazed how easy it is.

Ingredients 🧾

  • 1 ready-made pizza dough works great, though homemade is a delicious option too
  • 1 ½ cups yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar

Instructions 👩‍🍳

Warm your oven up to 400°F to get things started. Set the crust on a baking tray and prick it all over with a fork to keep it flat while baking.

Initial bake: Give the crust a quick 5-minute bake to firm it up slightly. Par-baking helps it stay crisp and not absorb too much moisture later.

Raw pizza crust on a pan with fork marks before baking

Mix your base: In one bowl, stir together the melted butter and yellow cake mix until crumbly and thick. In a separate bowl, combine the white sugar and brown sugar.

Mixing yellow cake mix with melted butter in a glass bowl

Layer it up: Remove the crust from the oven. Spread the buttery cake mix evenly over the surface. Don’t worry if it’s thick, just press it gently.

Scatter milk chocolate chips over the top, gently pressing them into the buttery layer

Finish with sugar: Scatter the sugar mixture over the top. You can use as much or as little as you like, but avoid the crust edges so they can crisp up nicely.

Spreading cake mix topping over pizza crust with a spatula

Slide the pan back into the oven and bake for another 10–12 minutes. The crust should be golden and the chips melted.

That’s it! Let it cool just slightly before slicing.
